The Vertical Diary...

Hi Guys,

I've had vertical diaries arrive with my A5's before, but have always used the horizontal ones because the rings just get in the way on Wednesdays.

I was in my room when I spied one of the 2013 vertical ones looking a bit forlorn and thought I'd take a closer look. Do you know what? The layout is great!!! But could it work for me?

I immediately transferred everything from my Lyndhurst into the Holborn, swapped the diary pages out, and gave it a go. I started out by writing some of my previous weeks stuff into January pages that I would never need.

But then it came up - that dreaded Wednesday reminder where pretty much the only way I could write it in would be to take the page out, and there is just no point in having it if you have to do that.

Of course my preferred option would be to stop working on Wednesdays, but as that isn't an option for me I had to admit defeat and put everything back how it was.

It's a shame - so much potential.

  1. Workless Wednesdays should be an option :)

  2. I used the vertical diaries but just accepted Wednesdays were useless.

    1. I could just say that I am useless on Wednesdays and just refuse to attend anything on a Wednesday :o)

  3. I had to laugh. Sometimes little stuff like the Wednesday issue can be a deal breaker. It seems so reasonable to us but to non-planner people (like my husband) it sounds ridiculous. He's always making fun of me for my little quirks about my planner.

  4. I use this layout, I quite like it but have to put up with taking the page out when it comes to Wed :-(

    1. I considered that, but decided I'd just get annoyed with it... I have the patience of a grumpy crocodile :-)

  5. I have to say I was quite disappointed when I realised it was a vertical diary in my new A5 Lyndhurst, looking for a replacement as we speak but think I am in the "1 kind won't do" category, I need to see daily weekly and monthly

    1. When I received the A5 vertical in one of my filofaxes from Sweden I felt truly hard done by. I had been really looking forward to getting another of their horizontal ones with the lovely paper. But variety is the spice of life and all that :o)

  6. I love this layout and don't consider having to take the pages out as an inconvenience, as my A5 Holborn is mostly a desk diary. If I need to write on Wednesdays in a hurry, I use a Frixion pen and then tidy it up later on. I think the advantages of this layout definitely outweigh the disadvantages. Though strangely enough, I dislike the same layout for the Personal size Filofax - it is landscape rather than portrait, and it just doesn't work for me at all.
We all have our favourite layouts, paper, pens, folders, etc :-)

    1. I love the layout, I just struggled to write in it, however if you check out my Daily Planner Setup post you will see that I have made my peace with the vertical layout :o)

  7. I hate these diaries too. Plus many of my A5s are not used with diaries in at all so I have a stockpile becuase I keep thinking I might find a use for them. April already and so far... no use!!

    1. Most of my filofaxes don't have a diary in, just my main one really. I don't like to think about the number of spare diaries that I have around. They're handy to use for general notes paper though :-)

  8. I've never tried this layout, but I really like the look of it.
Luckily I don't work Wednesdays, but I'd still want to put stuff in there though :)

  9. I had the same problem - shifting the diary section to the back helped a little, bulking out the left side so the rings weren't so prominent... but gave up at the start of April and have gone to one of the friendlier templates created by Steve and Ray.

    1. I have my diary a few sections back, and am surprisingly managing quite well with it (once I gave it a proper go) :-)
